Agile 101 with Scrum

Use Scrum to Learn about Agile

Course Description

‘Agile 101 with Scrum’ is an 8 hour workshop using Scrum to learn about agile. The course format suites everyone from Coaches to those new to agile.  Learn agile by doing.  Scrum dominates the world of agile.  The seminal document describing Scrum was updated in 2020:  The Scrum Guide.  Whether new to Scrum or an experienced specialist the Scrum Guide and its updates are required understanding for agile practitioners.  The Market demands our understanding of Scrum.  The major scaled agile frameworks and toolkits (e.g SAFE, Disciplined Agile) use Scrum as a foundational building block.

Students attending this course will use Scrum to learn about Agile with a deep focus on the Scrum Guide and foundational agile.  The Class is a mixture of traditional instruction and a ‘flipped Class format.’  The flipped Class spends 80% of Class time working together in Teams.  Teams work in immersive virtual environments using Zoom rooms and Miro online products provided as part of the course.  Brainscape online learning technology used in Class is also provided to students.  This adaptive, interactive, progressive system allows students to start the Agile learning journey and continuously improve their learning after the Class.

Attendees Take Away

Students leave ‘Agile 101 with Scrum’ with backup files of Miro Boards used.  In our new normal skills to facilitate remote Teams are at a premium and this is a fine addition to a leader’s toolkit.  The flipped Classroom format allows more than lecture.  Students will participate in presenting agile topics to the rest of the Class as part of the Classroom Scrum.  The act of teaching the rest of the Class ensures understanding.

“Those who know do. Those who understand teach.”

-  Aristotle

The engaged Class and Team format also provides remarkable and often enduring networking opportunities.

Participation in Live-Virtual Format

The Live Virtual environment is best experienced with a full-form computer, e.g. Laptop or Desktop.  Past students have expressed several equipment preferences.  A cheap USB mouse with a zoom roller rather than a touchpad makes it easier to navigate the online, virtual post-it-notes boards in Miro.  An inexpensive USB second screen works well with a Laptop allowing simultaneous viewing of the main conference room share and the virtual Team rooms.  A good headset with a boom microphone helps individuals immerse in Team rooms.

The best learning for Students depends on everyone’s participation.  Please make sure to be able to commit to the full day.  If you self-identify as not being a Digital Native, please consider watching introductory tutorial recordings at Zoom, Miro and Brainscape available at their sites:

  • Zoom
  • Miro
  • Brainscape

The email used to register for this course will also be the ‘user Id’ to login into products.  Please do not use multiple email addresses for the course and supporting products.

Last there is a small amount of pre-work.  Students are asked to download and read the The Scrum Guide.

  • Even if Agile and Scrum are not high on your list to learn, the experience of working with peers on the exercises and learning to use miro is well worth the time to attend. I believe everyone should have been able to pull some knowledge from this session. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'll be honest, I didn't think I would. Great job!
  • Excellent course with a great mix of content, learning activities and awesome facilitation by a knowledge leader.
  • Excellent presentation format and content.  Practical and relevant materials and interactions.
  • Great class, very interactive. It kept my attention the entire time.
  • Great engagement and group activities.
  • I really liked the learn by doing approach.  To understand Scrum, you need to experience it.  This class did a great job for teaching agile & Scrum through experiencing it in a class setting.  This approach helped develop the needed understanding to apply Scrum.
  • I thought this was a unique course that allowed hands on interactive learning rather than classroom style learning. I walked away from the day feeling like I had a much better understanding of agile basics.
  • It was a fun and interactive learning experience!
  • It's difficult to be perfect, but that was pretty darn close.  I enjoyed the course and it was a lot more engaging than many.  Thank you for not killing us with PowerPoint.
  • The course was a great hands on course that provided useful knowledge and tools for Scrum projects.
  • The course was very well put together.   It was engaging, challenging and a great compliment to project development methodologies, tools and techniques.  I especially likes the hands-on exercises.
  • Very informative and engaging!
  • Very interesting and very valuable
